1705 Mandela Parkway, Oakland

1705 Mandela is in a culturally diverse community with a thriving music and art scene in the Prescott neighborhood of Oakland. The 13 new three-story townhomes in a 25,800 SF building were designed to fit in among both the industrial and residential buildings of the neighborhood.

Twelve of the thirteen units are provided with entries directly off the street to help activate the streetscape. Along the street facades playful murals wrap the building tying into the artful neighborhood.

The design attempts to solve the challenge of housing for people that do not qualify for subsidized housing, but have a difficult time affording market-rate housing near communities they work in. Each residence contains the essential needs of a home: a place to sleep, cook, work, and relax. And the overall project contains an additional need: community.
